The Hill 705 is one of the historical sites better known of the Battle of the Ebro. Located in the Pàndols mountain range, in the region of Terra Alta, the republican troops achieved to conquer in a fast way this position during their initial offensive. From this privileged situation they could control and beat the rest of the heights that surrounded it.

At the beginning of the month of August of 1938, the army of Franco was prepared to dislodging the Republicans out of Pàndols mountain range. After several offensives, Franco finally triumphed on the morning of 14 August in a surprise attack of the 5th Tabor of Regulars de Tetuán. Franco achieved to conquer the position after paying a high cost of human lives.

In spite of this defeat, the republican troops sustained the high positions around Hill 705 and frustrated the offensive of Franco to all Pàndols area. Finally, with the battle already lost, the republican troops abandoned their positions to Pàndols in early November.

The Hill 705 became a symbol of the battle after the decision of the Association of Survivors of the Lleva del Biberó to build in this position a monument to pay tribute to fallen soldiers of both sides, called ‘Dau de la Pau’ (Dice of Peace). The Lleva del Biberó was the last fifth that was called by the Republican government, theirs members had between 17 and 18 years old.

The monument was inaugurated in 1989 as part of building a large open area above the summit, which has become a privileged observatory of this natural landscape and ancient warfront. More than 1.000 survivors attended the first acts of homage that they were celebrated year after year on the 25 of July, anniversary of the beginning of the battle of the Ebro. Over the years this figure has dropped to the 30 survivors of the fifth who attended in 2010. One of the most significant acts of homage took place in 2005 with the visit of Defence Minister of the Spanish government, José Bono, who wanted to symbolize the reconciliation of confronted sides with the handshake of two survivors of Franco and Republican armies.

The Hill 705 is one of the most visited historical sites of the Battle of the Ebro. To visit it is necessary to take the road C-43 between Gandesa and El Pinell de Brai. At one point of the road, a poster indicates the access to historical site. The road of access, with one section of asphalt and the last one of gravel, overcomes a considerable ramp until the top level. A parking allow stop the car, and walk by feet until the top of the hill.

The memorial
Apart from the Dice of Peace, in the vast esplanade there is a wall where several entities linked to republican side have placed plaques in remembrance at the several military units that struggled in the battle. In 2007, fascist ideology people pulled out two plaques, one of them placed by the UK consulate in Barcelona in memory of the British battalion of volunteers of the International Brigades and another one from the Association in memory of Communist Lieutenant Colonel, Enrique Líster.
